Agency, freelancer or specialist: who to hire

The choice is usually framed as a budget question. It is really a question of how much managing you want to keep.

Updated 17 October 2026

The question is usually asked as a budget question, and answered as one: agencies cost more, freelancers cost less. That is often true and rarely the point. What you are really choosing is how much of the work of managing the work you want to keep.

What you are actually buying

A freelancer sells you their own hours. You brief them, you review their work, and when they are unavailable the work stops. For a defined piece of work with one skill in it, that is the cheapest and fastest arrangement there is.

An agency sells you a team and the coordination of it. Part of what you pay for is the person who makes sure the designer, the editor and the media buyer are working to the same plan, and the fact that someone covers when one of them is away. If your project needs three skills and a deadline, that coordination is the product.

A specialist studio sits between the two: a small team, deep in one thing, used when the work is hard rather than broad.

Choose by shape of work, not by size of supplier

  • One skill, clear output. A video edited, a logo drawn, a page written. A freelancer, almost always.
  • Several skills, one deadline. A launch that needs film, design and paid media in the same fortnight. An agency, or a freelancer you trust to bring their own people and manage them.
  • Ongoing and unpredictable. Monthly content, always on campaigns, a site that keeps changing. Either, but as a retainer with named people, not as a series of one off jobs.
  • Hard and narrow. Arabic transcreation for a campaign, a payment integration, a data pipeline. A specialist, even where a generalist offers it.

The question that decides it

Who is going to manage this? If the honest answer is nobody in your company has the hours, then hiring three freelancers will cost you more than one agency, whatever the invoices say. If you do have someone who can brief and review, you are paying an agency for management you already own.

The expensive mistake is hiring freelancers for a multi part project and assuming they will coordinate themselves. They will not: each one is responsible for their own piece, and the gaps between the pieces belong to you.

What to check, whichever you choose

  • Who does the work. In an agency, ask who will actually be on your account, not who is in the pitch.
  • What happens when they are away. A freelancer with no cover is a risk you accept knowingly, not a surprise for week three.
  • How changes are handled. Revisions included, and what counts as a new request.
  • What you keep. Files, accounts and the right to reuse the work.

Location matters less than it used to, and still matters

Editing, design, writing and development happen anywhere. Filming, events and anything with a venue happen where you are. Providers on INFLUR list where they are based for that reason, and a provider outside the UAE is not a worse provider; they are the wrong provider for a shoot next Tuesday in Dubai. When you post a project, tick that the work needs someone on site and give the city, and providers confirm they can be there when they send a price.

Where it does matter for remote work is overlap: hours you share, and whether they have worked with UAE businesses before and know that the working week here runs Monday to Friday, while Saudi Arabia and most of the Gulf rest on Friday and Saturday.

You can try before you commit

A first small project tells you more than any pitch: how they ask questions, whether the first version is close, how they handle a change. Buy a fixed price package or post a small piece of the work before you hand over the whole thing.

On INFLUR both are open to you at once: post a project and compare proposals from agencies and freelancers side by side, with prices in AED, and see who understood the brief. INFLUR holds your payment until you approve the work.

Next step

Post your project. Compare the proposals.

Posting is free, the prices come back in AED, and you choose who does the work.
